Simple Strategies to overcome a creative block

“You can’t wait for inspiration, you have to go after it with a club” (Jack London).

It is just inevitable that those individuals, who think, imagine and ultimately create, will find asking themselves at one point or another "where is my inspiration" ? where it comes less easy for them as it used to be. No need to fight this and get upset over it; there are great techniques and strategies to help you to recharge yourself, spark your imagination once again and help you to overcome any such "writer's block".

First thing first, relax. It will come back to you, you have always had it so perhaps this imaginative creativity spot got over exhausted, and needs some letting go. Take a day off, go to places where the colors, the noise the smells will arouse something fresh. Markets are great places, unless you prefer nature, green surroundings and tranquility.

Define the element blocking you. Think outside of the box. Ask yourself what is it you are trying to achieve with no real success, and ask again if this is the right way to go. These questions will vary depending on the nature of the assignment you are trying to accomplish. Creativity may be required as part of your day job, where there are dead lines, or as part of your artistic journey, with no monthly reward being associated with it. In both scenarios asking yourself the right questions it a good start to define the blocking element and see if it is to be removed or if it is for you to step back and go in another direction.

Confusion is not something to fear from, it is actually a sign that a solution is waiting for you around the corner, so don't push it, embrace it. Go along with it, write down your new ideas, fear not if they are good or bad ones, just, without over thinking, put your ideas on paper, or dirty your canvas, as if no one will ever see it.

Go through your ideas, look for a spark, or a string to pull out, and go on doing something mindless and mundane. You will see it will all come back to you. Look at past works you are proud of, and remember what sparked your imagination back then.

At times, your 'block' is simply the result of way too many issues to handle, those issues called life; kids issues, elderly parents, past relationship with your sibling, a home maintenance issue etc. So remember that to have this spark back, you should leave all those issues for another day, or in other words you cannot think of all things at once.

Don't be too harsh on yourself -- “Have no fear of perfection, you’ll never reach it” (Salvador Dali). Come up with more ideas, look at your initial ones and go for those which seem to be the best to further explore.

You have to actively search for creativity, without overstressing yourself, but with a sense of pleasure of embarking on a new journey.

“Think left and think right and think low and think high. Oh, the thinks you can think up if only you try” – Dr. Seuss
