My name is Eleri, and I’m a ceramicist from Wales. My studio sits not far from the coast, and much of my inspiration comes from the shoreline — the colours of sea glass, the texture of driftwood, the calm rhythm of the waves. Each mug, bowl, or vase I make begins with local clay, and no two pieces ever come out the same. I like to think that’s their charm: a reminder that we, too, are never meant to be identical.
Why Handmade Feels Different
At Christmas, I often imagine the journey my pieces take. From my hands shaping and glazing them here in Wales, to yours — carefully wrapped and placed under a tree, waiting for that spark of joy when someone discovers it. Handmade has a certain warmth that mass-produced gifts can’t quite capture. Every imperfection is really just a fingerprint of the maker, a little sign of life.
Choosing Gifts with a Story
If you’re searching for something special this year, I’d encourage you to look for gifts that carry a story:
a ceramic mug glazed in hues inspired by the Welsh coastline,
a scarf handwoven from local wool,
or jewellery reimagined from vintage or reclaimed pieces.
These gifts don’t just fill a space — they tell tales, start conversations, and hold meaning.
Making It Personal
One of my favourite parts of this season is the wrapping ritual. Even simple brown paper feels special with a sprig of rosemary tucked under twine or a handwritten note folded inside. And when customers ask, I love adding a small touch — initials carved into the base of a mug, or a glaze in someone’s favourite shade of blue. These details make each piece feel like it belongs wholly to the person receiving it.
From My Studio to You
Often, I slip a little story card into my parcels: where the clay comes from, what inspired the glaze, or even which part of the coast I had in mind when I shaped it. My hope is that the person opening it doesn’t just receive a ceramic piece, but also a sense of connection — to me, to this place, to the idea that beauty can be both simple and deeply personal.
This Christmas, whether it’s one of my coastal mugs or a creation from another independent maker, I hope your gifts carry more than material value. May they carry stories, care, and the reminder that we are each one of a kind — and that’s what makes giving (and receiving) so meaningful.
With warmth,
Eleri
